About Pickering Hunt
The United States Pony Clubs, Inc., develops character, leadership, confidence and a sense of community in youth through a program that teaches the care of horses and ponies, riding and mounted sports.
PHPC holds events and practices throughout the year at numerous locations around the Glenmoore and Ludwigs Corner areas. PHPC is very active—our membership ranges 35-40 members per year, most of whom are actively involved in Pony Club activities.
We generally have two to three Pony Club activities per month, this includes lessons (mounted), unmounted instruction, rallies, or just fun social events. Some months there are things every week!
Our club sends one or more teams to the EPA rallies. These rallies have been for games, show jumping, dressage and eventing. The club has also organized rallies for EPA. We generally have a group of kids competing at USPC East Championships every year in a variety of disciplines.
We have a mixture of members, some own their own pony, and others lease. Some kids board their horses, while others keep their horse/pony at their own farm. For most of the kids, pony club is only part of their horse experiences. Most compete in one or more of hunters, jumpers, eventing, mounted games, and dressage. Some pony clubbers are involved with Polocrosse, fox hunting, and endurance riding disciplines as well. Our members range in ability from walk/trot and cross rails though preliminary level eventing and jumpers.
Our members range in age from 4 years old to over 60. Pony Club now supports a Horsemasters Program, which is for adults over the age of 25. Horsemasters have all the same educational and competitive opportunities as the younger members.
During the winter, we have many unmounted meetings, which is where we teach horse knowledge, from safe handling through bandaging and first aid in preparation for the Pony Club Certification programs.
Our members have Certifications from Unrated (new members) to A level. Several of our members have traveled with Pony Club, either through international exchange programs or with visiting instructor programs.
PHPC is also active in the community. We are a strong supporter of the Ludwigs Corner Horse Show, and provide community work throughout the year and significant volunteer assistance during the show. As well as providing competitors! We have done volunteer work for other places as well such as Ryerss Farm and Thorncroft. We also have Pony Clubbers that will volunteer at various other shows including 3 Star Events and the Devon Horse Show.
We are always happy to talk with you about joining Pony Club and if it is the right choice for you. You may come visit us and see what our club is all about, please contact Sherry French at pickeringhuntpcdc@gmail.com.
